A trio of public services projects have seen AWS award Australian digital consultancy ARQ with its newest Smart City Competency badge – as one of only nine launch partners worldwide.

Digital consulting and services firm ARQ Group has been granted Amazon Web Services’ latest tick of approval under its new AWS Smart City Competency program.

ARQ – picked up by Singtel tech subsidiary NCS for a cool $290 million earlier this year – achieved its market leading status courtesy of a trio of recent urban services projects in Victoria and New South Wales, and is the only Australia-based partner in the band to date.

“With cities at the front line of economic, social, and global challenges such as energy and water use, traffic management, sanitation, and sustainability, the quest to build cities that ‘work’ is increasingly reliant on technology solutions,” the cloud giant stated upon the launch of its newest competency program. “AWS artners leverage the power of AWS Cloud to innovate and deploy meaningful smart city solutions to these challenges.”

The Smart City program is broken down into nine categories, including among other areas urban energy, transportation, solid waste, water and wastewater, and lighting and public safety. For ARQ’s part, the firm was recognised for its “technical proficiency and proven customer success” on three public services projects centered on improved data storage and access, allowing for the more efficient and reliable delivery of essential services.

In one instance, ARQ worked with North East Water to establish a hybrid digital twin platform, enabling the Victorian utility’s engineers to check the status of sewer pumps and predict maintenance issues ahead of time via remote, mobile access. The firm also collaborated with Melbourne Water on a digital strategy to ensure more reliable provisioning, devising a state-of-the-art ‘data lake’ and analytics platform leveraging AWS cloud technology.

In perhaps the firm’s most consequential project – one which would see it pick up AWS Partner of the Year and Good Design awards for social impact – ARQ utilised AWS cloud to address significant traffic volumes in its re-architecture of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s emergency warning notification system Fires Near Me to a web and mobile app, which in serving over 500 million sessions undoubtedly saved lives during the catastrophic bushfire season of 2019/20.

An AWS premier consulting partner, the smart city competency badge is ARQs fourth across a variety of disciplines, following cloud migration, digital CX, and data & analytics consulting. ARQ chief technology officer James Vincent said the company was proud to be the first Australian organisation to achieve the Smart City status and be recognised for its expertise in creating innovative solutions for cities and urban spaces.

“As cities evolve and populations continue to grow, it’s important to leverage technology to address challenges associated with improving efficiency and performance,” Vincent stated. “We’ve applied innovative technology such as digital twin, data visualisation and data science to create actionable outcomes for our clients. This is the way forward to addressing urban challenges and creating sustainable and smarter cities.”

The other eight AWS Smart City partners are: Elitery (Indonesia), FuseForward (Canada), Kalkitech (India), Miovision (Canada), Quantela (United States), Rekor (United States), Rubicon (United States), and Vianova (France).
