Alvarez & Marsal expands Tax team with nine senior members
Alvarez & Marsal has doubled down on its growth plans in Australia’s tax advisory market with the hire of nine new Managing Directors.
In its somanieth raid of the Big Fours firms somewhere around the globe this year, Alvarez & Marsal has brought in eight senior practitioners from EY, Deloitte, KPMG and most notably, PwC.
Joanna Black, Vaughn Lindfield, Rachel Munro, Andrew Moore, Jagmohan Singh have all joined from PwC, while Brett Todd (Deloitte), Nathan Hamilton (KPMG), and Lisa Cusano (EY) have crossed from the other Big Four giants. Michael Johns is the sole industry hire.
Sean Keegan, Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal and leader of the Australia Tax practice, said the significant country-wide talent hire continues the firm’s remarkable growth in Australia (at a time when many rivals are downsizing) and builds on the firm’s global growth strategy for its Tax practice.
The US-headquartered consulting firm only launched its Australian Tax practice in February this year, through a massive team hire from Big Four firms and other talent.
“Our new Managing Directors bring a wealth of collective tax advisory, mergers and acquisitions, tax structuring, transaction planning, tax controversy and corporate tax advisory experience to Alvarez & Marsal. Their engagements span multiple industries, including financial services, private equity, real estate, mining, infrastructure, technology, media, telecommunications, and government privatization.”
All seven Managing Directors crossing from the Big Four either held positions as partner or served in leadership roles. “They all have in-depth strategic tax planning and drafting knowledge along with experience negotiating challenging tax aspects of transactions, as well as engaging with revenue authorities to resolve tax controversies.”
Johns meanwhile spent the past three years with the Australian Taxation Office in South Australia, but is also a Big Four alumni, having served PwC for years, latterly leading its outbound tax practice in Adelaide.
The cohort will work from Alvarez & Marsal’s offices in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Company-wide, Alvarez & Marsal now has close to 350 staff in Australia.
“Alvarez & Marsal’s ongoing expansion in Australia represents our commitment to rapid growth in key markets around the world,” commented Ernie Perez, Global Practice Leader of the Tax practice. “The addition of these nine new Managing Directors allows us to continue to enhance our wholistic suite of offerings in Australia with credible, experienced talent.”
