FTI Consulting has added Phil Smith as a managing director within its technology division, as one of four investigations and artificial intelligence recruits worldwide.

Based out of Melbourne, Smith returns to FTI Consulting after an earlier stint of more than a decade between Australia and the United Kingdom, with the intervening five years spent at Ashurst and case management platform EDT.

Smith was recruited alongside Rohit Kelkar and Kristen Litgen in the US and the UK’s Anthony Usher, with FTI Consulting stating that the quartet would further strengthen the firm’s ability to support global clients facing increased challenges.

“We continue to provide clients with advanced solutions for digital risk, disputes, and investigations, leveraging AI and remaining attuned to a safe balance between risk and innovation,” stated Sophie Ross, the CEO of FTI’s global technology business. “Phil will further strengthen our team and contribute to the ongoing evolution of our client-centric, technology-driven offerings.”

A commerce graduate with Deakin University, Smith originally joined FTI Consulting in 2007, before working his way up the ranks to senior director over the space of twelve and a half years, including five of those spent as a senior consultant and director in the firm’s London office. From there, he joined Ashurst, serving as APAC head of eDiscovery for the firm’s ‘NewLaw’ division, Ashurst Advance.

“Phil has led responses to some of Australia’s most complex data challenges relating to royal commissions, regulatory responses, investigations, data breaches and other contentious disputes,” FTI stated. “His focus will include AI solutions, working alongside FTI Technology’s global team to develop practical implementations for advanced AI in a results-driven and defensible manner.”

Most recently, Smith has served over the past year as head of product and customer experience at EDT, a Queensland-based SaaS case management platform for the justice and regulatory sectors, but, in a LinkedIn post in response to his return to FTI Consulting as part of the firm ever-growing pool of technology experts, said, “Dorothy was right; there’s no place like home.”

“Working at scale within a global team, and leveraging the cross segment capabilities are vital for solving new world data challenges, and taking advantage of the immense opportunities they provide,” Smith continued. “I'm looking forward to working with some extremely clever people to develop pragmatic solutions using advanced tech to help solve our clients real world problems.”
