Professional services firm FTI Consulting has launched a dedicated healthcare & human services practice in Australia, led by Nathan Schlesinger out of Sydney alongside a team of senior recruits.

FTI Consulting said the new practice will focus on supporting clients in areas such as system reform and sustainability, digitisation and productivity, described by the firm as key industry agendas. FTI Consulting also said it would continue to recruit further health sector industry expertise, complemented by its existing lines in economics, operations, risk and restructuring among others.

“FTI Consulting is uniquely positioned as the only independent and fully dedicated health & human services team with national scale and access to global capabilities,” stated Australia leader Mark Dewar. “This model enables us to forge deep relationships across the industry, so our clients receive tailored, impactful solutions, combining extensive industry knowledge with the agility of FTI Consulting.”

Heading up the practice out of Sydney, Schlesinger previously spent more than a decade and a half at PwC, most recently as national health consulting lead partner and global head of health services, and altogether brings 25 years worth of experience advising both public and private health and aged care sector clients across Australia, the US and Southeast Asia.

“We are at a pivotal moment in the care sector, where the sustainability of the system is under significant strain, yet we also have unprecedented opportunities through advancements in technology and treatment,” Schlesinger said. “I’m excited to join FTI and build a team dedicated to driving meaningful improvements while supporting the professionals who make such a difference in these sectors every day.”

Schlesinger is joined in Sydney by fellow senior managing director Nicki Doyle, who crosses from the partnership of KPMG, where she also spent over a decade and co-led the management consulting division’s aged care practice with a focus on strategy, evaluation, service models, and policy design for government and NGO clients.

In addition, FTI has already recruited a further six managing directors to the practice across Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, and Perth, including Somer Dawson, Alicia Boyd, and Laura Day from Scyne Advisory, fellow former PwC colleagues Taahir Kerbelker and Charlotte Gordon, and ex-Cerner (now Oracle Cerner) Queensland and Asia Pacific general manager Trina Adams.

John Park, the leader of the corporate finance & restructuring division, said the firm would continue to invest in the practice: “The need for support has never been greater, with rising industry costs, workforce shortages and technological advancements. As we navigate a complex environment marked by significant challenges, the sustainability of healthcare, aged care and human services is under immense pressure.”
