PSC Consulting has beefed up its European presence with acquisitions in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Last week, the New Zealand headquartered consulting firm to the energy and utilities sector acquired the Power Systems practice of Danish-origin Ramboll in the UK. The bolt-on adds in-depth power system and electricity capabilities to PSC Consulting’s portfolio in the UK.

Tim Miles, General Manager of PSC Consulting UK, said “The addition of the Ramboll Power Systems UK bolsters our regional capacity and broadens our service offerings to include expertise in areas we have historically needed to partner to deliver. Additionally, the combination provides the market with a strong, medium-sized provider that can respond to client needs quickly and capably.”

The UK acquisition closed two weeks after the company purchased Gridconnect, an Ireland-based firm specialising in grid connection, design, and construction supervision of electrical installations. This deal enhanced PSC Consulting’s services in the installation and interconnection of renewable energy technologies.

Founded in 2012 by Carlos Galvan, Gridconnect has supported clients around the world with more than 2GW worth of renewable generation projects. “Joining PSC allows us to further develop our careers at local and international levels while we can contribute through our experience to the growth of PSC,” said Galvan.

Navigating change

The pair of deals come at a time of unprecedented change in the electricity industry. The growing demand for renewable distributed energy – today renewable power accounts for more than 33% of the world’s total installed power generating capacity – and internationalisation of electricity networks means that utility providers need to upgrade their networks and change the way they operate.

This is where PSC Consulting comes into play. The consultancy helps its electric utility clients deploy, manage, and maintain power system solutions to deliver clean, reliable, efficient, safe and affordable power to their customers.

PSC Consulting now has a headcount in Europe of around 35 professionals and globally its team is 180-strong. Alex Boyd, the CEO of PSC Consulting, on the scoops, “With the acquisitions of Gridconnect and Ramboll UK’s Power Systems team, we are actively addressing the need for a strong medium-sized electricity specialist option available to our clients in these regions.”

In Europe, PSC Consulting has offices in London, Newcastle and Warwick in the UK, Dublin in Ireland, and Ludvika in Sweden. The consulting firm, founded in 1995 by Tony Armstrong and Ranil De Silva in New Zealand, also has offices in North America and Asia.
