BCG partner Amitabh Mall joins Woolworths in executive role

Boston Consulting Group managing director and senior partner Amitabh Mall has stepped down from the firm’s partnership to join Woolworths as its Chief Analytics Officer. 

In the executive role, Amitabh Mall will lead the use of data analytics across the Woolworths Group and across key functions including corporate development, mergers & acquisitions, finance, human resources and operations. “Advanced analytics is key to improving the experiences, ranges, and services we provide to our customers and the support we provide to our teams and suppliers,” said Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci. 

Mall brings two decades of strategic consulting experience to the role, all gained at MBB giant Boston Consulting Group (BCG). A senior partner based in the Sydney office of the US$8.6 billion consultancy, he most recently led the firm’s Consumer Practice (including Retail, Fashion & Luxury, Consumer Products and Travel & Tourism) across Asia-Pacific.

He specialises in advising consumer and retail businesses on their transformation agenda, and helping them capture the opportunities arising from the latest in data and digital. His work typically involves a cross-functional approach cutting across strategy, growth, sales & marketing, merchandising, operations, supply chain, finance and people. 

Alongside his Chief Analytics Officer role, Mall will also serve as General Manager of Q-Retail, a new business launched by Woolworths. Q-Retail combines the data science and analytics capabilities of Woolworths and Quantium, a data analytics and data management business the retailer acquired last week. 

The retail giant already had a 47 percent stake in Quantium from a transaction back in 2013, but has now lifted its stake to 75 percent in a $223 million deal, with the remaining shares in the hands of Quantium’s founders and staff.

“Through this transaction, we aspire to bring together Quantium’s advanced analytics capability and Woolworths Group’s retail capabilities to unlock value across our entire retail ecosystem,” said Banducci.
