BCG partner Marguerite Fitzgerald to lead Carnival in Australia

The world's largest cruise company Carnival has named Boston Consulting Group senior Marguerite Fitzgerald the new president of its Australian operation.

With a portfolio of nine of the world's leading cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, P&O Cruises and Cunard, Carnival is one of the world's largest leisure travel companies. The British-American cruise operator, founded in 1972, has approximately 100 vessels and generated just under US$6 billion in revenues in the pre-Covid-19 era.

Over the past five years, Carnival’s Australian division was led by Sture Myrmell, and following his elevation to president of the UK division (the firm’s largest business unit), the group sailed out to find a replacement. That search has led to the appointment of Marguerite Fitzgerald, a senior company member of Boston Consulting Group, who will take on the role per the 1st of January 2022.

An Australian national and graduate of the University of Melbourne, Fitzgerald has been with Boston Consulting Group for seventeen years, working from its offices in Australia, France and the United States. The managing director and partner currently serves as the firm’s global lodging and leisure practice leader, based out of Miami.

Fitzgerald has worked across travel and tourism industries (airlines, hotels, cruise lines, theme parks) as well as in different geographies (Australia, Asia, Europe, the US, the Middle East, and the Caribbean), and has a strong interest in consumer-led strategy, operations, loyalty programs, and innovation and transformation.

In her recent engagements, Marguerite has developed international strategies (both entry and growth) for leisure companies – including cruise lines (including several Carnival Corporation brands), theme parks and hotels.

“Marguerite is a trusted global authority in the travel and tourism industry with extensive expertise in the worldwide cruise passenger market, including direct experience working in the Australian and New Zealand region,” said Jan Swartz, president of Carnival subsidiary Holland America.

“With the insight she brings from strategy consulting with some of the world's most well-known travel and tourism companies, including several of our brands, she is uniquely qualified to make a strong contribution to Carnival Australia’s continued success. We are delighted to welcome her to the team.”
