Nous Group has bolstered the international team of its education practice with the appointments of two industry experts.

The Australian-origin management consulting firm has appointed Julie Mercer and Matt Durnin a principal, based in the UK and Canada. Mercer was the former global industry lead for Deloitte’s Education practice, while Durnin crosses from a role as global head of Insights & Consultancy for the British Council out of Beijing.

“Julie and Matt bring world-leading insights and experience to Nous Group. I know our clients across the UK, Canada and Australia will value their counsel as they confront their biggest challenges,” said Nous founder and managing partner Tim Orton, who noted the firm’s recent acquisition of higher education specialist Cubane Consulting. “These appointments are a further sign of Nous Group’ market leadership position in higher education.”

To be based out of London, Julie Mercer brings more than two decades of education sector experience gained in various locations around the world, including Australia together with the Middle East, India and US. Joining Deloitte in 1997, she established and led the firm’s global education practice for close to a decade, before more recently serving as Higher Education and Transformation lead partner at boutique British strategy consultancy Cairneagle.

“I am very much looking forward to joining Nous and helping to bring the firm’s unique proposition to more clients in the UK and globally,” Mercer said. “I have been very struck by the team’s energy and commitment and their desire to support clients to make positive, lasting change. I am delighted to be joining such a talented and purpose-driven firm and look forward to making my contribution to the collective success of our teams and our clients.”

Having been based in Beijing for the past fourteen years, Matt Durnin will now join Nous’s office in Toronto. Currently undertaking a doctorate of business administration in higher education management with the University of Bath, Durnin has for the past three and a half years led the British Council’s global consulting and market intelligence services for UK education institutes, having delivered more than 40 projects in support of international recruitment.

“I'm excited to join Nous because of the team's reputation for excellence and track record of delivering transformation change,” Durnin commented on his appointment. “We are in the middle of a challenging and fascinating era in education because so many forces are pushing us to rethink how the industry operates. I'm looking forward to helping clients reimagine their strategic approaches to succeed in this rapidly changing environment.”
