MinterEllison Consulting – the advisory wing of leading law firm MinterEllison – has strengthened its leadership team with Shannon Sedgwick, who crosses from Ankura.

Appointed a partner, Sydney-based Sedgwick brings two decades of experience to the firm, the past decade of which he focused on governance, risk, compliance, and in particular cybersecurity services.

A widely recognised expert in cyber consulting, Sedgwick has advised dozens of organisations on cybersecurity matters, operating out of Australia and the United States. He also provides technology and cyber risk due diligence work to private equity firms (and their portfolio companies) on pre-and post-acquisitions.

At MinterEllison Consulting, Sedgwick now leads the Cybersecurity practice, which brings together the firm’s technology, risk and security expertise with MinterEllison’s powerhouse legal capabilities to provide for a rounded offering at clients across sectors.

“MinterEllison’s broad range of services, which combine technology consulting and legal services relating to cyber security, offers clients a team that can comprehensively plan for and respond to issues and threats. I look forward to taking MinterEllison Consulting cyber offering to a new level,” Sedgwick said.

Andrew Cunningham, Managing Partner of MinterEllison Consulting, said the firm is delighted to welcome the seasoned partner at a time of growing demand for cyber expertise, with industry association AustCyber recently warning that demand is outpacing the supply of talent. Meanwhile, a number of recent high-profile data breaches (such as Optus) sent a further warning to executives on the need for adequately securing their digital frontiers.

“Shannon’s experience and skills deepen our cyber consulting practice to deliver clients solutions to build their cyber resilience, assist compliance, and protect them from and respond to threats. He has worked across industries and will be an asset to our government and key industry teams,” Cunningham said.

Prior to joining MinterEllison Consulting, Sedgwick was a senior managing director at Ankura in charge of its Cyber practice across Asia Pacific. Before this, he was with Deloitte, leading its Cyber Risk practice in Canberra. In between, he served Verizon in a consultant role, and earlier, he worked for US-based consultancy GM Risk Group.

Commenting on the appointment, Virginia Briggs, CEO and Managing Partner at MinterEllison, said: “All businesses, regardless of industry, demand greater breadth and depth to cyber security services. They know they need to incorporate cyber security into all aspects of their business to minimise vulnerabilities and disruption. We are therefore pleased to welcome a leader of Shannon’s global calibre and profile to the firm.”
