IT services and infrastructure firm Kyndryl is in the final phase of decoupling from IBM, with a recent visit from global CEO Martin Schroeter revealing Australia as one of the company’s ten largest markets.

The Australian branch of IBM spin-off Kyndryl is having a big month as the IT firm closes in on its second anniversary.

Global chairman and CEO Martin Schroeter – who is an Australian citizen – has been Down Under for a series of meetings and events, which he described as a packed few days of meetings with customers and government in both Sydney and Melbourne along with employee roundtables and a standing-room-only Town Hall.

Also Down Under was Mark Slaga, the global consulting leader of Kyndryl.

Speaking to Sky News during his trip, Schroeter described Kyndryl as “the world’s largest startup” with 85,000 employees overseeing critical IT infrastructure “that kind of runs the world”.

Schroeter also revealed that Australia was one of the company’s ten largest markets, and said of his visit; “As we go through the transformation journey we’re on (uncoupling from IBM), it’s important to spend time with the teams and customers helping to drive that transformation.”

As part of that uncoupling process (Schroeter stated the deadline to fully establish its own systems independent of IBM coincides with Kyndryl’s two-year anniversary in early November), the firm is in the process of shifting from its current Southgate location to a new office space in Melbourne’s centre. It follows the firm’s New Zealand arm, which launched its office in the Auckland CBD earlier this year.

Last week, Kyndryl at a global level announced a strategic alliance with Palo Alto Networks. The collaboration focuses on end-to-end network and cybersecurity services for joint enterprise customers.
