Pitcher Partners promotes US tax specialist Terry Hoban to partner

The Sydney office of Pitcher Partners has made the accounting and consulting firm’s first partnership appointment of the year, elevating US tax specialist Terry Hoban to the top level.

Hoban has been with Pitcher Partners in Sydney since 2023, while also serving as the APAC lead for Baker Tilly’s global mobility tax group, before which he spent more than a decade and a half between KPMG and PwC.

According to Sydney managing partner Adam Irwin, Pitcher Partners is the only mid-market advisory of its kind in Australia with specialist in-house US tax capabilities, for which he says demand is continuing to grow.

“This is a complex area, and we recognised some time ago that there was an opportunity for our firm to specialise in providing cross-border advice,” Irwin said. “Terry’s promotion recognises the significant contribution he has made to our existing capabilities, as well as the value he has delivered to clients. His expertise is crucial to helping people make the right decisions now, for the future.”

A business and law graduate of the University of Technology Sydney, Hoban spent the early part of his career at PwC– including a three and a half year stint based in Tokyo – before moving on to KPMG, where he spent a further eight years and led the local Big Four firm’s US individual tax practice, building his reputation as an expert advisor to both US expats and outbound Aussies.

“Relocating overseas is already a challenging process, and navigating the US tax system adds another layer of complexity, particularly for Australians with typical investment structures like family trusts and self-managed super funds,” Hoban said. “Our support also extends beyond individuals to companies that are expanding across the Pacific, including their founders and employees.”

Since crossing to Pitcher Partners’ private business & family advisory team as an executive director in mid-2023, Hoban has also served as co-chair of Baker Tilly’s international global mobility tax committee, and commonly supports HNWI (high-net-worth individual) Americans looking to move abroad in areas such as voluntary disclosure and estate and pre-immigration planning.

Ahead of the next expected exodus, he cautions; “Even if US nationals move abroad, they are still required to file an annual tax return. The process is incredibly complex, so a knowledgeable team in your corner is invaluable. Our advice is most effective when we have the opportunity to get it right up front, rather than having to untangle affairs that have become more complicated.”
