UK-based AI consultancy Tomoro launches with bold ambitions in Australia
UK-based AI consulting and engineering firm Tomoro has expanded to Australia through outlets in Sydney and Melbourne, with plans to build its local headcount to 40 over the next twelve months.
Established out of Accenture in 2023 in close partnership with OpenAI, Tomoro has in just two years grown to more than 100 professionals and technicians across offices in London, Edinburgh and Singapore, the latter which was launched in June.
Driven by the vision of a ‘three-day working week’, Tomoro combines strategy and technical know-how to design, build and scale AI solutions for clients across a range of industries, including finance, healthcare, consumer goods and logistics among others.
“We work on the most ambitious enterprise AI projects in the world, and that means we need to work with the most ambitious clients in the world.” stated managing director Ed Broussard, who co-founded Tomoro alongside a number of other long-term colleagues and Accenture alum after selling his previous data advisory business Mudano to the tech consulting giant in early 2020.
As to the firm’s expansion downunder, Broussard continued; “Australia is rapidly emerging as Asia-Pacific’s AI hub, and is one of the most advanced countries in terms of adoption among consumers. Combined with the Aussie spirit for innovation and taking on bold new ideas meant that Australia was the obvious choice for us to find the best AI talent in the world, along with the boldest clients.”
Describing itself as focused on designing and building autonomous AI agents rather than just surface-level automation, Tomoro has to date served several high-profile global clients, including the NBA, Red Bull, Fidelity, and Virgin Atlantic. The firm says that it has also already been engaged by a number of top-level local organisations, including a major A/NZ airline and telco.
In respect to local talent, Tomoro expects to grow its Australian team to as many as 50 professionals over the next twelve months, led by former Accenture banking industry data & AI lead Dan Edgar, who also previously served as a strategy & transformation director at KPMG and senior strategy consultant at Deloitte, which then bought his co-founded tech consultancy The Eclair Group.
“Our mission is to embed AI deeply into how organisations operate, and I’m passionate about building Australia’s AI capabilities and elevating our homegrown talent on the world stage,” Edgar said. “Tomoro has a proven track-record with some of the most advanced AI challenges and solutions globally, and I’m excited to join and help Australia realise the same ambition.”
Tomoro enters the local market as an Open AI services partner and promise to be an active voice in the national agenda around AI skills, productivity and investment in its bold bid to slash the working week to only three days within the next four years, saying it will work with Australian universities, clients, and industry partners in its efforts to achieve that goal.
“We have worked with Tomoro on creating some of the most ambitious enterprise AI solutions for major clients across Europe and Singapore”, said OpenAI’s Asia Pacific go-to-market head Andy Brown, with the firm also recently opening its first local office in Sydney. “Their arrival in Australia will help more local businesses unlock value from advanced AI, moving from debate to possibility.”
