Government department selects Accenture for SAP replacement programme
Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts has launched a major enterprise resource planning (ERP) transformation programme, appointing Accenture as its consulting and implementation partner.
The transformation will see the department replace its ageing SAP ECC6 environment with a new solution centred on Workday and ServiceNow. The move has been prompted by SAP ECC6 nearing its official end-of-life in late 2027 – although maintenance extensions are possible – as well as the department’s decision to move away from SAP altogether.
“The solution will replace the department’s existing SAP ECC6 environment, providing enterprise-wide capabilities for finance and financial management, human resources, payroll, procurement and related workflows, employee and manager self-service functions, corporate reporting and analytics, case management, asset management, and work health and safety,” a spokesperson for the department said.
According to the spokesperson, Workday and ServiceNow were selected for their modern platforms and range of emerging technology capabilities, including workflow automation, analytics and AI-enabled functionality.
“The department will assess these capabilities over time in line with business requirements, security considerations, governance arrangements and value-for-money objectives.”
The ERP transformation is planned to be delivered in two phases, allowing the department to progressively implement new capabilities while supporting business readiness throughout the programme.
Implementation partner: Accenture
Under a three-year, $38.8 million engagement, Accenture has been selected as the programme’s delivery partner.
The consulting firm will act as both systems integrator and implementation partner. “Accenture will deliver a cloud-based ERP solution centred on Workday for finance, human resources and payroll functions, and ServiceNow to support service management and workflow capabilities,” the spokesperson said.
The engagement with Accenture is scheduled to run until mid-2029, with the option to extend the arrangement until mid-2032 if required.
The programme will be delivered jointly by Accenture and departmental resources. “Accenture will be supported by an internal team to deliver the solution and ensure the end product is consistent with departmental requirements and policies,” the spokesperson said.
