FTI Consulting promotes Michael Bates to senior managing director
FTI Consulting has made a record number of senior managing director promotions around the world to kick off the new year – including Michael Bates in the firm’s Sydney office.
A specialist in private capital advisory services, Michael Bates has been with the global consulting firm since 2016, and joins an Australian leadership team of roughly 30 senior managing directors spread across offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

A Bachelor of Commerce graduate from the University of Sydney, Bates kicked off his career as an accountant at Australian restructuring and advisory firm McGrathNicol, steadily working his way up to senior manager level over the course of eleven and a half years. In 2016, Bates joined FTI Consulting as a managing director, where he serves private equity clients on a range of matters across multiple industries.
Over the course of his career, Bates has developed specific expertise in areas of business performance and transactions, such as due diligence, merger integration, cost optimisation, cash and working capital management, crisis management, organisational design, and performance improvement. He has led engagements in retail, media, technology, manufacturing, and financial services among other sectors.
Bates was the sole Australia-based adviser among the record 59 start-of-year promotions made by FTI Consulting around the world (following the elevation of two in Australia last year and a snubbing for the two years prior), although the local branch has in recent months recruited communications expert Renée Law Bertuch and former Deloitte partner Kumar Padisetti as Senior Managing Directors to its Sydney and Melbourne offices.
