The technology division of professional services firm FTI Consulting has been celebrating this past week, winning both company-wide and individual awards for cybersecurity and data privacy.

Most recently, FTI Consulting has been named ‘Cyber Security Consulting Business of the Year’ in the enterprise category at the third annual Australian Cyber Awards, hosted by online industry publication Cyber Daily at a gala event in Sydney.

A finalist in the category last year, FTI Consulting has gone one better in 2025 to claim top honours from an advisory perspective, with Australian practice leader Wouter Veugelen also receiving the award for cybersecurity consultant of the year.

The traditional turnaround & restructuring specialist has been building up its cybersecurity capabilities since launching the practice locally in 2023, driven by the recruitment of Veugelen as senior managing director in Sydney after having previously spent more than a decade between PwC and Ernst & Young.

Veugelen said of the dual accolades: “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short time. Since inception, we have supported many clients with cyber maturity uplift initiatives and to meet compliance obligations, responded to destructive ransomware incidents, conducted complex post-breach investigations, and provided cybersecurity expert witness testimony.”

The cyber awards continue a busy week of celebrations for FTI’s technology consulting division, with fellow Sydney-based information governance, privacy & security practice leader Tim de Sousa also being recognised with the ‘vanguard award’ for Oceania from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the world’s largest such industry body.

Speaking on the honour, de Sousa said: “If I count it up, I’ve now been a privacy professional for over 15 years. When I started, social media was in its infancy, smart phones were just starting out, big data was only theory, and augmented reality was science fiction. Like many privacy pros, I’ve had to acquire many new hats as the industry constantly grows new heads.”

FTI’s cybersecurity practice brings together hundreds of cybersecurity experts, developers, data scientists and strategic communications professionals with extensive investigative, intelligence, and enforcement backgrounds to provide clients with an integrated offering covering analysis, preparation, threats, compliance, recovery and response.

The firm states: “FTI Consulting takes an intelligence-led, expert-driven, strategic approach to global cybersecurity and data privacy challenges affecting people, operations and reputation. As cyber threats continue to evolve, and threat actors become more sophisticated, organisations must prepare for an increasingly complex threat landscape.”
