KordaMentha welcomes veteran Scott Tanner as financial services leader
Professional services firm KordaMentha has added one-time Bain director Scott Tanner as a performance improvement partner in Melbourne and leader of its financial services sector team.
Tanner brings decades worth of high-level leadership experience to KordaMentha’s performance improvement partnership in Melbourne, including as the former leader of Bain & Company’s financial services practice for the Asia Pacific.
In addition to its mid-year promotions, Tanner is the firm’s eighth new partner to join over the past six months, including former Victorian government CTO Luke Halliday and Matt Chessel, the founder of digital consultancy acquisition Charter X.
Presenting as a triple threat, Tanner likewise brings significant technology experience to the firm alongside his business and financial services nous, having previously served as consumer bank COO and chief digital officer at Westpac, as well as CEO of the Bank of Melbourne for over six years. Remarkably, Tanner earlier in his career was also head of strategic marketing at NAB.
After a decade at NAB and following the completion of an MBA from Melbourne Business School to go with an RMIT mathematics degree, Tanner in 1995 joined Bain & Company, where he would spend the next decade and a half before returning to the banking sector, including as director of its Melbourne office and APAC head of both financial services and performance improvement.
Additionally, among other roles, Tanner is managing director of brokerage GreenBack Capital and executive chair of high-end real estate firm Kay & Burton, and was until recently chair of locally-defunct marketing & digital consulting roll-up GrowthOps. He was also previously Committee for Melbourne chair and a director at Tennis Australia, which has a long connection to Bain.
Altogether bringing more than 35 years of experience across financial services, corporate turnarounds, M&A, technology solutions, and digital transformation, KordaMentha described Tanner as one of Australia’s most respected business leaders, and his recruitment a significant step in the firm’s efforts to build deep industry experience as part of its growth strategy.
“We pride ourselves on helping clients grow, adapt and build value,” stated co-founder and CEO, Mark Korda. “Scott’s background in financial services, digital transformation and business leadership is a welcome addition to the firm’s capability, and his appointment is another example of our focus on recruiting genuine experts with notable hands-on experience.”
Tanner responded in kind; “KordaMentha’s focus on building deep industry expertise sets it apart from generalist advisory firms. As with all sectors, the financial services sector is evolving rapidly with new technologies and changing consumer expectations, and KordaMentha is exceptionally well placed to help clients navigate, adapt and thrive.”
