The advisory division of Aurecon has launched a new service line aimed at helping private and public sector organisations with adopting circular economy principles.

The new Circular Economy service line, part of the firm’s Sustainability & Climate Change advisory practice (70 staff), has launched with a 15-strong team comprising experts from within Aurecon’s ranks as well as new hires that have been brought on board over the past months.

“We’ve established a dedicated circular economy team to meet burgeoning demand for circular economy expertise in Australia and New Zealand,” said Jodie Bricout, who joined Aurecon last year and has taken charge of building the team.

According to global research by McKinsey & Company and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the circular economy is not only a billion-dollar opportunity for industries, but at the same time a key driver of the path towards net-zero. Closer to home, PwC’s Australian research team recently suggested that a circular economy could present the nation with a $2 trillion opportunity.

Echoing McKinsey’s, PwC’s and other research studies conducted on the topic, Bricout said, “Circular economy approaches are key to achieving net zero. Around 45% of emissions are linked to materials and products in our economies and can’t be reduced through changing energy systems alone.”

“For organisations and sectors, there is a huge opportunity to reap the economic, environmental and social benefits of transitioning to a circular economy.”

This is where Aurecon’s fresh Circular Economy team comes in. “We can support our clients from ideation to execution.” The team brings a multidisciplinary approach to the table, spanning engineering, advisory and technical skills.

Bricout said that the team is currently involved in 18 projects spanning local and state governments, water utilities, resources, major infrastructure and renewable energy, including Rio Tinto, Sydney Water, City of Adelaide, Sustainability Victoria and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

The members of the new service line operate out of various locations including Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth in Australia, and Wellington in New Zealand.
